Broken Elbow

Well, it finally happened. Otylia managed to break her elbow the other night when she fell off my bed. Not falling off a jungle gym or trampoline, but falling off my bed. Specifically she has what is called a supracondylar humerus fracture. According the research I’ve found, it’s most common in kids ages 5-7 years old. This fracture was caused when she landed on her arm trying to break her fall off the bed. Instead, she hyperextended her elbow to the point where the lower part of her humerus actually broke. The end result was an evening at the hospital having her fracture reduced, which required pins to be inserted and then a cast over her whole arm. Inserting the pins required anesthesia, so we spent the night at the hospital. Amazingly to me, she’s rebounded pretty quick, and although her arm is sore, she’s getting along just fine. She did get a pretty purple cast out of the deal, and an equally cool blue sling. Here she is, one day later.

UPDATE: Due to popular demand, I’m including a better photo of just her pretty purple cast.
