Phantom Regiment 1991

This was our equipment truck that housed all of our drums, bugles, flags, uniforms, and pit equipment. I took this picture while on a stop through my hometown of New Brighton, Minnesota.

I’ve included some photos I have from my summer with Regiment in 1991. That summer I was one of 20 Baritone/Euphonium players. We ranged in age from 15 to 21, and we came from all over the country. We split the baritones into three parts for the music, and I played third. The unofficial leader of the third baritones (future conductor Aaron Ozminski), renamed the section the “Lower Octave Leads.”

Our show was called “Phantom Voices” and was a show celebrating great opera themes. We opened with Nessun Dorma, from Turandot featuring J.D. Shaw on the mellophone. Our second number was Pagliacci, based on the Maynard Fergusen adaptation and featuring Euphonium player Matt “Smiley” Chapman and Ray Vasquez on Soprano. We closed with an improved version the Bacchanalle from Samson and Delilah which was first performed by Phantom Regiment in the 1990 season. We finished in third place that year at Drum Corps International World Finals in Dallas, Texas with a score of 96.2.

Jeff Shaw in Nessun Dorma
Jeff Shaw (see his website—he plays with the Boston Brass) plays the introductory solo during a full corps rehearsal of Nessun Dorma in June, 1991. I took this picture while recovering from an asthma attack that sent me to the emergency room in Boston.

This was one of our four buses that was used to move the crew about during our 15,000 mile tour that summer.

Pagliacci
During a water break for the hornline, I snapped this picture of the drumline in their broken heart form for Pagliacci. The photo was taken in early June 1991 at a rehearsal camp at Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, IL.

A closeup of me during the finals performance. This is during the last 30 seconds of the show, where I was also caught on a TV closeup.
Matt at Madison
My parents took this picture of me after the show “Preview of Champions” in Madison, WI. This was also the first opportunity for many of my friends to see me that summer.

Practicing direction changes
While I was sidelined for a couple of days because of an asthma attack, I took this picture of the corps practicing changes of direction. This is the least favorite activity of almost anyone in the group.
Snareline
The snareline practiced their part during the beginning of Pagliacci.
Tenor break
The tenors practice their feature during Bacchanalle.

This photo of the baritones/euphoniums was taken in New Jersey about mid-summer.

This is a screen capture I took from the DCI Legacy DVD. I’m the baritone player on the far left. This shot was taken towards the end of Bacchanle, just before the show ends.

Wow, this brings me back, Matt. Hugs to Jessi and all the gaggle of Russian composers ;)

You can age out, but the memories never do.

Just stumbled onto your site! My band is planning on doing a version of your 1991 Phantom Show! I enjoyed the pictures and insights from that year you posted. Your show was the first drum corps show I saw in person, and is still one of my favorites! I saw you guys at GRC high school in Winchester, KY. Take Care!!

I also just stumbled onto your site looking for photos of the years I marched in Regiment (99 asst. conductor and 02 snareline). I just wanted to say thanks to you and all the alumni before me that helped pave the way to greatness for the Phantom Regiment. Without 91′ , 93′ and numerous other years, I would have probably gone to another corps… but I was captivated by those shows and knew from a very young age I wanted to be a part of the Phantom Regiment. It has forever changed my life in such a positive way and gave me friends for life… not to mention the memories of a lifetime. Take care of yourself and if we never meet, at least we still have one thing in common… and that’s SUTA!!!
